As we look into 2021, we wanted to let you know of a few trends that we are seeing in the insurance industry at the start of the New Year:
Accelerated Underwriting Programs Continue to Expand
We will continue to see the growth of accelerated underwriting programs. Many of the carriers have improved and increased their policy limits across the board, allowing for less medical exams. Credit scores, electronic doctors records, and many other advancements have transformed the underwriting process and allow for a less invasive underwriting experience.
Paperless Experience
With more accelerated underwriting programs, clients are able to take advantage of telephone interviews and secure data forms to decrease their outside contact and need for medical exams. With everything going online and electronic, we are now able to offer our clients and advisors a 100% paperless experience on new business processing (we will still need wet signatures for beneficiary changes, etc).
Electronic Medical Records - Decreasing Underwriting Time
The medical record process can easily be the longest piece of the underwriting process. The average turnaround time is around 30 days for a copy service to go out, scan the records, fax them to the underwriter, and then have the underwriters review the records.
Thankfully, there is a new provider out there called Human API where it allows the client to set up a secure link between the underwriter and their doctor's office for access to their medical records online. This now makes it possible for an underwriter to review medical records the same day the client creates their link. We will continue to see Human API become more mainstream throughout 2021 and beyond.
Foreign Travel
Foreign travel during COVID-19 times are no longer automatic declines with many insurance carriers. There can still be a 14 day wait from last possible trip and all upcoming trips must be disclosed on application - this varies to carrier to carrier.
